Dear Parents, Friends and Supporters of Kilmurry National School
As many have heard, plans for our ‘astroturf’ pitch are now gathering pace. A separate Pitch Development Committee, under the umbrella of the Parents Association, has been established and some preliminary presentations have been made to the school and wider community.
As we all know, our children are in school for the wettest nine months of the year! While we have been lucky in Kilmurry National School to have a wonderful school site with grassed areas, it is rare that the surface is suitable for sports and playtime – activities vital in the whole development of children. More and more schools have seen the benefits of developing synthetic surface play areas and now it is Kilmurry National School’s time.
Support for this exciting development is growing and we are now embarking on the most challenging phase of the project which is the fundraising. The project is to provide a large, drained, synthetic grass play area to the rear of the school while still maintaining traditional grassed areas. The current estimated cost is approximately €65,000 and significant ‘seed funding’ has been provided by the Board of Management and the Parents Association as a solid foundation for the fundraising. As such, we are seeking to raise the remaining €45,000. It was decided early on in the project not to directly approach families or have a school capitation system. Instead, the Pitch Development Committee are planning a range of fundraising activities over the coming months, the aim is to raise the money required as quickly as possible to maximise the benefit of the children now coming through the school.
Starting this month, fundraising events for the remainder of 2017 include;
- Oct 13th – Cash for Clobber – all collections this year will go towards the Pitch Development fund
- Oct 30th – ‘Spooky Halloween Trail’ at 12 O’Clock Hills, tickets available, see posters
- Nov 26th – Coffee morning, final details to follow
- Nov / Dec – Christmas Cards, similar to previous years, will be organised through Parents Association and school
- Dec 9th – Children’s Carol Singing at Shannon Town Centre
We hope to have some exciting news on other events and opportunities for 2018 and will be providing an update towards the end of the year. We are also flinging the net wide and will be seeking appropriate corporate support and sponsorship, but realise that we will be a small fish in a big sea of fundraising.
To quote from a letter recently prepared by the sixth class students of our school;
“We are a very sport active school and we have won many sporting achievements to date in hurling, camogie, cross country, basketball and soccer titles. We have won several divisions in the Cumann na mBunscol competitions in recent year, just think how much you could help boost our sporting achievements if we had an astro turf pitch?
The astro turf pitch would be used daily and will grant a massive amount of space for school activities such as physical education, lunch playtimes, Fun for All Day and afterschool trainings.
By contributing to our astro turf funding, you are changing the lives of the past, present and future pupils of Kilmurry N.S. Not only would you create a healthy school but you would also create a happy one.”
We realise that there are constant demands on us financially but are absolutely convinced that the difference the new Pitch Development will have to the school will be transformative. It is rare that opportunities come along to make a real difference, we hope you seize this one and help our fundraising efforts and activities during the year. Let’s get the pain over and done quickly and have the rest of time to play!
If you have any queries, suggestions, offers of support, please feel free to contact us directly or through the school. We are all parents of children in the school and frequently around.
Many thanks for your time
