Newsletter September 2018

Dear Parents,

We would like to welcome all pupils back to school and in particular we wish our newly enrolled pupils the very best as they embark upon a special time in their lives. We would also like to welcome  Ms. Collins (2nd and 3rd class) and  Mr. Flanagan (4th and 5th class).  Mr. Ruane will be a shared Resource Teacher with Kilmurry NS, Tulla NS, and Sixmilebridge N.S.

The Youth Academy Ireland NUI Galway and the Irish Centre for Talented Youth (CTYI): have developed courses to work with high ability primary school children to support their learning and academic development. They have asked us to pass on assessment application forms for their courses to parents of children who received high marks in their Maths or English standardised test results. If you feel that your child would benefit from attending these courses application forms which contain details and costs are available from the office or there is further information available from and

Pupil Absences: (Education Welfare Act 2000). All absences totalling more than 20 days in the school year have to be reported to the National Education Welfare Board.  Written confirmation) to your child’s teacher is required for all absences, outlining the commencement date, the return date and the reason for being absent (please see notes in back of school journals). Phone calls to the school or verbal messages to the teacher are not sufficient.

Contact Details: Please ensure your phone details are with the school.  Please inform the school of any changes to your address or mobile phone / landline details so that we can update our records and you are contactable in case of an emergency/illness etc.

Pupil Illness: For health and safety reasons, please note that pupils who are sick may not remain in classrooms during break /lunch as we have no facility to supervise them.

Car Park: I would like to remind parents of the car park layout.  The addition of an area for children to walk safely between cars and the school gate has made the car park safer for our children.  Below is a reminder of the layout :-

  • Staff park on the road side of the car park (right hand side)
  • Parents reverse into a space park on the school / garden side of the car park
  • There is a walkway marked out that runs along the fence and school garden to allow children to walk safely from cars to the school door without having to cross in front of traffic
  • If there is an available car parking space, please use it (please reverse into the space)
  • Please do not obstruct the flow of traffic.
  • Please do not stop to let children out of cars at the entrance / slope to the carpark
  • Please do not double park at collection or drop off times and obstruct other cars

School Opening Times: Classes commence at 8.50 am each day. The yard/school will be supervised from 8.30 a.m. until the bell rings.  No formal responsibility can be accepted for pupils arriving before that time.  As staff may be involved in organisation and preparation for the day ahead, they cannot supervise formally so parents are requested to bring their children to school as close to the official start time as possible. The Board of Management and Staff acknowledge the ongoing parental support with this and the car park as we work to protect the safety of every child in the school.

Appointments: It is important that appointments are made if a parent wants to discuss the academic or social progress of their child with the class teacher.  Teachers are more than willing to meet with you, but arrange a time that is mutually suitable to you both.  Appointments can be made by ringing the school or putting a note in your child’s diary.

Book Rental Scheme: Thanks to John McCrohan for all his help in setting up another successful book rental scheme this year and also to Marie Forde and Helen Brew who assisted with distributing the books.  This is a huge undertaking and we appreciate the work that is done by the Parents’ Association and the Book Committee each year.

School Tracksuits : Please label your child’s tracksuits and jackets as this is the only way we can identify the owner of lost property.

Intel Mini Scientist: This competition is an initiative which allows students from 4th, 5th and 6th  classes to develop science related projects which are then exhibited at school level. We hope to have this exhibition in November when members of the school community can drop in and view all of the projects.  The winning groups will be invited by Intel to attend the final in the Intel Campus, Shannon in early December. Please note that it is at the discretion of the parents of the winning groups if they wish to bring their children to this event.  We will have more details closer to the time.

All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil: Well done to all our students who took part in the Fleadh Cheoil this year.  This year saw Emma Fitzgerald winning the U12 band competition.

Kilmurry Harvest Festival: Congratulations to the committee on another very successful harvest festival.

Missing AR books: A number of books from the Accelerated Reading library have gone missing. We would ask parents to check at home for any AR books they may have  forgotten to return.
